A Year in Review 2013

We started off the year with a trip to the dentist

followed by a celebration for Mommy's 30th birthday in February.
You had your Valentines Party at school
and we had our first big snow storm of the year.
We started off March with the flu (stomach bug),
followed by a nice day
and then Influenza.
We celebrated Easter
went on a field trip to the Independence Zoo
and ended your preschool year at Lincoln.
We kicked off summer with a trip to the lake for Memorial Day
followed by your birthday in June
and back to the lake for 4th of July.
In August, we went to Branson with your cousins to celebrate Nanny and Poppy's 60th Wedding Anniversary
and then made a quick-trip to Kansas City for our back-to-school trip.
You started Kindergarten
and followed it up with one last trip to the lake on Labor Day.
We made our annual trip to the Tulsa State Fair in October
but accompanied it with Disney on Ice this year.
Mommy's best friend Mikinzi got married
and we finished out October with a trip to the Pumpkin Patch
and Halloween.
We had a low-key Thanksgiving in Chanute
and started preparing for Christmas shortly after.

As always, December was fun-filled
but ended with a case of the stomach flu.
I hope having the flu on New Year's Eve isn't a sign of things to come in 2014! Bring it on, we are ready!

A day with family...

is always a good day!
I've had the Winter Blues the last couple of months so have been trying to soak up as much sunshine as I can on these nice days. I had the best summer, which probably hasn't helped with my lack of sun and Vitamin D levels this winter. Thankfully, we live in Kansas so a stretch of 20 degree highs and snow will be followed by a week in the 50's with sunshine. Thank you sweet baby Jesus, I'll take it!
Last weekend, Tylee and I headed to Chanute to spend the day with my Dad. Call me redneck, but a day with the kids in Papa's garage is usually just what the doctor ordered. They had fun shooting Tylee's BB-Gun, while I enjoyed my time in the lawn chair watching Papa teach 5 kids 12 and under how to shoot a BB-Gun. Now that's entertainment!

Survey 2013

Survey 2013

1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before? Starting off this survey great - nothing that I can think of?

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Um, kinda. The first part of my resolution was: keep up with my running/clean eating. No siree, I did not do that. And the second part of my resolution was: to do more for myself. I would say I did that. It is nice to put yourself first sometimes and once I started the habit, I was hooked! I think that is a good thing.
This year, I'd like to stop gaining and losing the same 20 pounds and to find a better balance. It seems lately that I'm either on-top-of-the-world or at rock-bottom, and I need to find a happy-medium that helps me realize that even though I'm frazzled/fed-up/done/tired of something right now, the next week it will most likely be a non-issue so just relax.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? My close-friend from highschool, Chelsea had sweet little Jade last Spring.

4. Did anyone close to you die? We lost one of our good friend last February in a car-accident. I still think about him often and catch myself thinking I see him, then remembering he isn't here.

5. What countries did you visit? Nada.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013? More motivation and self-control.

7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? I suck at dates but 2013 will always be remembered as the year we sent our little girl to Kindergarten.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Um, it is been a pretty mundane year. I didn't do anything worth noting.

9. What was your biggest failure? Probably giving in to anxiety and losing the care-free feeling that I typically have about life.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? I didn't but Tylee had Influenza B and it was the scariest thing I've ever been through.

11. What was the best thing you bought? My new car! I loved my Jeep but was definitely poor because of it. Getting a car and down-grading opened up a whole new world for me. I run to Chanute at the drop of a hat, don't even think twice about going to Joplin for something small - 14mpg vs. 30mpg changes everything! Not to mention my payment was cut in half. Sorry Jeep, I don't miss you one bit!

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? I bet my answer to this one will always be Tylee. She was so nervous about starting Kindergarten this year but has thrived. She already knows all of her Kindergarten sight-words and has moved on to the 1st grade list. She is reading beginner books and has just soared academically this year. I couldn't be more proud!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? We've had a pretty good year with no drama and no torn relationships! Yay for that.

14. Where did most of your money go? Definitely to activities. If I flip through my Instagram feed or browse 2013 on my blog, we were on-the-go! And definitely groceries. We eat well in my house.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? I'd say I had one of the best summers I've had in a long time. Does that count?

16. What song will always remind you of 2013? My favorite songs this year were probably Cups (Pitch Perfect Soundtrack), When I Was Your Man by Bruno Mars, and Oh, Tonight by the Josh Abbott Band. I don't lodge dates in my mind like that so I doubt they remind me of 2013 but they will remind me of this time in my life.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:a) happier or sadder? b) thinner or fatter? c) richer or poorer? Happier, Fatter, Richer

18. What do you wish you’d done more of? Went camping.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Eating. Overthinking things.

20. How did you spend Christmas? No need to rehash.

21. Did you fall in love in 2013?  More in love with my little family of 3!

22. What was your favorite TV program? Survivor

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? No, I hated them last year too. :-D

24. What was the best book you read? My love of reading kinda disintegrated this year but out of the 10 or so books that I read, I'd say that I enjoyed Wild, Every Day, and The Fault in Our Stars the most.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery? I don't know that my radio has left the local country station all year. With Tylee going back and forth to school with me, I don't have much time for music anymore. Taylor Swift (and more recently the Frozen sountrack) is about as far as my music realm goes. I do have to say that is one thing I do miss about running. (That and my jeans fitting.)

26. What did you want and get? A different car.

27. What did you want and not get? Carat diamond earrings, I think these will be on my list for a long time. (I'm not even sure I want these anymore but I don't have anything else I want either.)

28. What was your favorite film of this year? Frozen? That may be the only movie I saw this year. Oh! The Croods but it wasn't a favorite.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I was spoiled rotten by my friends! They took me to Chili's on the day of my actual birthday, and then TJ threw a big party for me at the Elks the next weekend. Your dirty Thirty only happens once!

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? This sounds so cliché because doesn't everyone have something that they strive for or want to improve their life? I know most of the time, people only post the good stuff but I am honestly so content and happy with my life, there isn't one thing that could've made it better. (A miracle weight-loss pill? A money tree?)

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013? I'm actually trying harder! I've been spending some more money on myself (see #2) and invested in some good facial products and makeup, as well as upping my shoe collection (still only own a pair of heeled black boots for funerals and the pair of heels I wore in Mikinzi's wedding), and accessories! 3 out of 5 days a week I actually feel put together.
32. What kept you sane? TJ, my friends, family, and Bud Light.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Jennifer Lawrence was intriguing to me but fancy? Nah.

34. What political issue stirred you the most? I have absolutely no interest in politics what-so-ever. Don't know, don't care - do whatever you guys want.

35. Who did you miss? My family.
36. Who was the best new person you met? Nobody in particular but I am just so overwhelmed with the friendships that I have as an adult. So many people that I know do not have their own group of friends but these girls honestly are some of the most important people in my life. We've all been friends for awhile but my love for these girls has definitely blossomed in 2013.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013.

This has always been "my quote" but it is fitting for this stage of my life as well.

"Everything is always okay in the end. If it's not okay, it is not the end."

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. Nada.

Christmas Morning

TJ and I were up early on Christmas morning but we didn't have to wait long before Tylee ran in our room asking if Santa had came. She was happy to see her American Girl Doll, Julie, which looked a tad creepy under the tree.
I'm thinking by the time I was Tylee's age, I was digging under the tree every chance I got counting presents, writing what I thought they were on the tag, and making sure my brother or sister didn't have more. Tylee didn't seem to care this year so once they were wrapped and organized under the tree, that is where they stayed. This made a nice surprise for her come Christmas morning, when she realized how many she had!
Legos, a Scrapbook, new Markers, Sorry, a Charm It bracelet, necessities (socks, underwear, jammies, hat, gloves, and scarf), a Lalaloopsy, and last but not least, a matching set of Jammies for her and Julie. Spoiled Rotten!

Christmas Eve

Last year on Christmas Eve, Tylee lasted all of 5 minutes in the cookie making/decorating process. This year I planned ahead a little better and we made the cookies on Monday, leaving the decorating to do with Grammy on Tuesday.

Fake smile 101
Tylee woke up bright and early on Christmas Eve and couldn't hardly wait for Grammy to get there. Finally, after the longest day of her life, we had our first Christmas of the year. First up: cookie decorating.
Thank goodness we had done the cookies early because we only got through about half of them before Tylee was tired and wanted to move on to presents. Sugar cookies freeze well, right?
Next up: presents! Grammy got Tylee the most annoying cat ever, Daisy, a furr-real friend. Thank goodness it was made with an off switch!
Merle wasn't sure what to think!
After presents, we made home-ade pizzas and although they weren't fancy or traditional, they were lots of fun! Tylee isn't a big pizza fan but usually eats her pizza whenever she makes it herself.
I never joined a blogger Holiday Home tour this year but am glad I took the time to snap at least a couple pictures of my décor.
After pizza, we loaded up and went to look at lights. We had a little ice-storm the weekend before Christmas and our internet was down ,so I downloaded the Norad Santa app on my phone. We were in town looking at lights, checking my phone every 30 seconds, and seeing Santa in Russia - then suddenly he appeared on a roof (same roof every year)! Tylee was neeerrrvous and wanted to get home and get to bed ASAP. We came home and put out the reindeer food, put out cookies for Santa, and headed to bed!
TJ and I stayed up and watched A Christmas Story waiting for Tylee to fall asleep, yet she kept coming out worrying that Santa wasn't going to come because we were awake. Finally, once the tears started falling, we set our alarms and went to bed as well.
